Harmonizing your surroundings and your brain: Why you need to learn how your surroundings leave an imprint on your neural circuitry.

Our environment can profoundly impact our brain, influencing both our wellbeing and performance:

Our brains are made to respond to spatial cues in our environment. Architectural elements such as symmetry, scale and texture can evoke specific neural responses, influencing our mood and cognitive processes.

Neuroscientific research shows us that exposure to aesthetically pleasing environments, art and sensoric pleasing experiences and stimuli, releases neurotransmitters like dopamine, oxytocine and serotonine, so we feel pleasure and satisfaction. It actually impacts the pleasure centers in our brain.

A multitude of novel experiences, such as traveling, stimulates our senses and challenge our perceptions. These experiences have a profound impact on neuroplasticity: the brain’s ability to reorganize and form new neural connections. To broaden our neural pathways, will foster creativity, adaptability, enhance cognition, create emotional equilibrium, wellbeing and resilience.

Through the intentional design of the space around you, mental and emotional wellbeing will be promoted. It effects our stress levels and our cognitive function.

All sensory stimuli are important, beyond visual aesthetics, also sounds, scents and tactile sensations play a crucial role in shaping our neural pathways.

If you know that every brain is wired differently, by genetics and past life experiences; even the associations, culture and memories of you individually will be important in creating the surroundings, that fit you the best!

Mis en Mind: A New concept in design and brain health

Architecture and interior design. Match it to your brain.

Mis en Mind stands for the focus on the unique mind and brain of every individual.

We put the ‘Mind on stage’ and therefore illuminate every angle of someone’s essence: their ‘true self’.

Your mind is where it all begins and where it all ends:

-        40-60% of your genetics wire your brain as it is.

-        40-60% of all the environmental elements that you encounter in your life also rewire your brain.

-        The process of changes that your brain goes through, keeps going through your entire life: it never stops!

-        Your brain processes every stimulus it encounters: all sensoric elements, environmental characteristics and social aspects.

-        The way your brain is wired will indicate how you will perceive things, how you feel, behave, perform and experience the whole world and everything around you.

-        When your brain undergoes some kind of change, so will you and the way you are.

You see that your environment and your surroundings are a very important part of personal development, which holds a huge potential in personal wellbeing and in emotional and brain health and optimizing oneself for peak performance!

Well, how does it work?

Your brain has a lot of different pathways from one braincell to another, through different regions in your brain. You have different regions with different functions and pathways that run through them all, connecting every part of your brain with another part.

The more and the stronger those connections, the better your brain will work and the capacities you will have regarding the functions of your brain.

This means you will be able to regulate yourself more, plan ahead better, concentrate better, think, be creative, don’t get overwhelmed by your emotions and so on.

With a strong interconnected brain, you will have more control over yourself, what you want to accomplish and your life and wellbeing.

In this regard it is interesting to know that you can make the connections between braincells stronger or weaker, through external influence. By exercise for example, but also by influencing pathways close to those you want to make stronger for example: ‘neurons that fire together, wire together’ or by influencing a part of the brain that is interconnected with another part that you would like to enhance more. For example your emotional centre of the brain lies in the same part as where the biggest part of your memory is situated. By evoking a thoughtful process of emotion, you can influence other connections as well.

Or by triggering already existing pathways in your brain and try to get them associated with a new function, idea, thought or emotion, through means of conditioning training.

So you see, your brain is a whole playfield of endless possibilities, where you just need to know what you are doing, what you need and work with it in a very customized manner.

It’s by combining creativity and the abilities to mold your own brain and therefore your life, by creating the right interior design, architectural elements, surroundings and environment that one can truly take control!

Believe us, it is interesting as hell and heavenly fun to become the master of yourself and the world around you!

How to optimize your functioning?

Why is it is so important to adapt your environment to the needs of your brain or your unique personality make-up?

Have you ever wondered why you can’t concentrate or why you feel bored? Or why you feel more agitated or nervous? And just can’t really tell why. Nothing really happened, you slept just fine and there are no real issues in your life bothering you, but still you are not quite functioning as you should or as you would like…procrastination anyone?

Have you ever heard people comment on the ‘AD(H)D-diagnosis’ and say ‘it’s just fashion now to put labels on kids and that there were no or less children with labels ‘back in the days’?

What if we say the answer in why you feel like this or perform like that, or children do or don’t what they should be doing, lies in the environment? In someone’s surroundings?

Ever hear people say ‘they now feel like home’? Or ‘now they feel like they have the job where they belong’?

Chances are that one of the key factors are that their environment is more adjusted to the needs of their brain and soul.

So how can you find out if there is a match or ‘mismatch’ between yourself, your brain and your environment, your surroundings?

First of all it can be helpful to hold a journal and write all the environmental elements you experience in the space around you, the next time you experience negative emotions or notice cognitive or performance problems. If you see multiple elements coming back at those times, it is interesting to go and look further!

So why is this so important? To know this, you need to know that your brain is ‘never in a rest modus’. It is always working and processing al kinds of stimuli. That is why sometimes an event or activity can become ‘to much’ and you need a break. You want to withdraw. Sometimes at home, sometimes at work, sometimes from a social encounter. You can feel it gradually or it can hit you at once. And in some cases you just feel at edge or not quite ‘ok’ when you are in a building or specific setting. It just ‘doesn’t feel right’.

Your brain and soul need a change, need something else in that moment. And that is nothing really surprising, no? Who wants to eat the same thing, every… single… day?

Or your brain just needs a different kind of space, so your brain doesn’t have to much excessive stimuli to process or doesn’t get to bored by a lack of it. An acrobatic artist can juggle a lot of balls in the air, but if you just keep adding them up, at a given moment everything will fall down.

A brain needs the right kind of stimuli at the right time and in the right amount. Every brain and person is wired differently, by how they grew up, the relationships they had, the environment in which they resided, so everyone needs a different roadmap to which environment works best for them.

But everything keeps being in motion. Your brain doesn’t stop evolving and changing. It changes with every experience, every space it encounters, every social interaction..so by controlling those elements you can influence your brain.

So what should you do first?

1)     Self-discovery

First of all you need to get to know yourself in a deeply manner. Why do you do what you do? Why do you perform like that? Why are you feeling like you do? Which kind of thought patterns are you having?

If you know who you truly are, you will know your ‘baseline’. How your brain is wired and what you normally need to get your brain to work in an optimal level. With that you will feel more balanced and happy, concentrate better, perform better and just have a higher level of well-being.

2)     Self improvement

Second, if you want to go a step further: you can focus on something you would like to change in a momentary way and after that, if you repeat it enough, in a more permanent way.

Take it in, step by step…it makes sense doesn’t it?

And the fun part: you can get totally creative with it too! Mix and match what you need, change and tweak.

So in a nutshell: How to design a better brain? By changing your environment!

If you want to change something about yourself, just change your surroundings!

Just Mind your space, baby!

Why your Interior design will become your new brainfood

It all begins with an idea.

What if you could unlock the needs of your brain and use your interior and architectural design to help support it?

Spoiler alert: we all have a brain! So why do we state it like that?

Because it’s the functioning of your brain that influences how a person behaves, performs, feels and even thinks. Based on how your brain is wired and which area’s in your brain are well of less interconnected or developed, we will experience things in a certain matter.

Our brain is made by our genetics and by the experiences we get in life. And this last process never stops! So if you know that your surroundings, influences the make up of your brain, why wouldn’t you use it actually?

It doesn’t make sense to not take it into account, if you want to enhance your emotional and physical wellbeing and cognitive and sportive performance.

If you want to take control over your life and how you perceive it, you should look at what surrounds you.

You should tweak all those elements to your own benefit! And this can be done very easy and simple. You just need to know three things:

1.      How your brain is wired: what your needs actually are and how this unlocks the keys of your mind

2.      What elements in your interior design, architectural landscape, (travel) experiences,

(we call it the space around you), can make a difference for you

3.      How you can change does elements to match your individual needs

The right kind of environment, in your office, home or performance studio will give your brain the support it needs. It can be stimulated or soothed, or targeted for specific goals. By this you can influence how you respond to things and how they are perceived.

If you get this, you will understand that there are more ways than one to influence your brain and one of them is by the world around you.

You will see that the design that surrounds you, is indeed more than just soul food or eye candy, it is brainfood!

How ‘psychology meets design’ is not enough. Why it should say ‘neuroscience meets design’.

It all begins with an idea.

Why is it not enough? To answer that question, let’s take a trip on the history lane of design.

Even through history people were preoccupied with how they were living, in which areas and which buildings. It mostly was a way of expression and a display of one’s wealth. The bigger the better, the more opulent the better. If you watch MTV cribs, we know it still counts.

In oriental philosophy it was believed that your interior design had an influence on your happiness and energy. It’s a real treat that we now know that multiple elements of that philosophy, also have a scientific base. They didn’t knew then, but we know now!

In psychology the correlation between someone’s personality traits and their home interior was studied.

In a sideway of psychology, environmental psychology emerged and it was seen how the design of public space could influence the behavior of people. It can effect criminality rates in a city or how much or fast you would put something in a bin. And in commercial settings, marketing psychology looks at how people would buy more or faster through the use of the things that surrounds them. Think for example of how the scent of bread in a bakery actually increases sales. So last time you were in a bakery, are you sure you really wanted that cinnamon roll?

In cognitive psychology, we also learned a lot about visual perception and how emotion can be evoked, what tickles and intrigues. For example, we love it more to see a visual of a scantily clad woman than a woman who is totally naked. It seems in a whole, people like to solve puzzles. It actually releases pleasure or dopamine in your brain. So sorry to break it to you, the good looking woman has nothing to do with it! But please do not use this as some kind of excuse towards your partner. You know us psychologists: always having some tricks up our sleeves.

In interior design and the design of outdoor spaces, many designers take into account how colors can impact how people feel. Is there even someone out there that hasn’t heard of it yet? Hello, color psychology!

In a new field, called the interior design psychology, as a part of environmental psychology, design psychologists try to design interior in regard of psychological concepts and constructs in an individual manner. And however this is already very interesting,

What remains missing, is the knowledge about the interaction between the environment and the functioning of the brain. And here is where it gets fascinating!

Why? Well because of the simple fact of interaction of course. Neuroscientific research, in an area called neuro-aesthetics, shows us not only how environmental elements, including design, can effect how you feel and behave and therefore have an influence on your brain. All you feel, think and do, flows from your brain after all. No, it also shows us how it can change your brain! Say that again?

By altering the elements that surround you, it’s possible to make pathways between braincells more or less strong for example.  Like you would do when you practice playing a musical instrument or when you have to rehabilitate after an accident or a stroke. Even in rehabilitation clinics they know the way into your brain.

So you see, implementing neuroscience into design, is the sum of all of the above. It’s next level. It’s creating and designing in a very customized and individual manner.

By creating the ideal world around you, you take care of your brain. You give it what it needs, so it can grow, flourish and be at it’s best.

It’s how you would nurture a child, that you love…so why not your brain…the piece that incorporates your heart and soul and your individuality, it’s the whole essence of your being. Would you not want to take care of that?

Knowing me, knowing you…the only thing we can do…is use neuroscience as a core part of our design process!

When to use interior design, to go next level in performance enhancement and selfcare?

It all begins with an idea.

When should we use it? Or is the question rather why and how?

When? Whenever you want to enhance your performance and your wellbeing.

Why? As a part of selfcare and self development.

How? By using the design of your surroundings as a tool.

But how do we start?

First of all, you should think about what it is, you want to achieve.

Do you want to climb those stairs? Or do you want to feel embraced and happy, as seen when you reach that heart? Do you want change in a certain area? Or do you want an environment that suits you, in the best way possible?

Different questions, get different answers. We are making a plea here to go customized, after all.

I you want to have an environment that suits you best, you should go and find out how you and your brain are functioning in a general way. For example: how do you process information and sensory stimuli? How do you normally feel or how can you regulate your emotions?

Or do you want that certain aspects change? Maybe you want to be able to focus better or be more creative. It takes different tweaks in your environment to optimize those skills.

And what about certain moments in life, where you are just not how ‘you normally are, or supposed to be’? Let’s say if you are heading to a burnout or a depression for example. Those problems alter the way your brain functions and how your mind will work. So you need another environment than when you’re just content in life. It’s not that groundbreaking either: sometimes we feel like going to a party and the other moment we just want to hang out on the couch alone. The cause is how you are feeling, what happened through your day, if your brain needs rest or stimulation and so on.

So here we have it, we can create a space to give your brain what it needs. At each moment in time and in general! How awesome is that?

But because every brain is wired differently, by the difference in life experiences and genetics, we need to go into depth in what makes you, you!

And when we have your blueprint or mind map, we can look at all the elements, scientific research shows us, that can be altered to your benefit.

So do you need bold colors or a soft color pallet? A lot of contrast or not?

Which kind of patterns on your wallpaper do you need? Or which kind of materials in your furniture?

What type of fabrics? And what to think about the amount of light and it’s characteristics? What about the amount of space in depth and height, that surrounds you? What sounds should you hear in the background? And many things more..

Taking care of yourself is about creating balance where you need it, to adapt or compensate where it is required, to evoke change where you want it, so you can be elevated. And everything that flows from you: your work and tasks, your behavior, etc.

It is said that change starts within…that is true, but change that starts within, know their beginning outside.

Because by now, you know: what’s in is out and what’s out is in!

It takes two to tango, baby…
